In an annual custom that spans nearly half of her life, Alexandra Shuster, of Margate, delivered books, toys and clothing to Shore Medical Center’s Pediatric Care Center on Monday, Nov. 25. Shuster’s generous donation will be used to brighten the stays of patients and their families throughout the holiday season.

Shuster, 21, began her philanthropic tradition nine years ago as a service project that was part of her Bat Mitzvah preparation at Beth El Synagogue in Margate. Now a senior at Pennsylvania State University, Shuster, who will graduate in May with a degree in psychology, said she looks forward to her yearly visit to Shore Medical.

“It just makes me feel really good to come back and give back to my community,” said Shuster. “It is extremely gratifying to do nice things for other people, especially people who are in need or are going through a tough time.”

Each year, Shuster solicits donations from area businesses, which she collects and presents to Shore Medical near the Thanksgiving holiday. The books, toys, stuffed animals, clothes and other donations she collected will be given to patients and families in the medical center’s groundbreaking Pediatric Care Center.

“Alexandra’s commitment to giving back is so impressive and makes such an impact on us all,” said Annmarie Guerrieri, RN, BSN, Nurse Manager for Shore’s Pediatric Care Center, Emergency Department and Telemetry. “During a festive time of year when no one wants to visit or be in the hospital, these toys will make a tremendous impact on the spirits of our young patients and their families.”

Shore’s kid-friendly Pediatric Care Center was the first of its kind in the state of New Jersey, featuring a dedicated and separate pediatric treatment area for minor illnesses and injuries, as well as inpatient rooms. Children are seen by board certified Emergency Department physicians and specially trained pediatric emergency nurses, in consultation with physicians from Onsite Neonatal Partners.
