DR. ALAN B. STEINBERG, 70

Dr. Alan B. Steinberg, 70, of Deerfield Beach, FL and formerly of Margate and Galloway Township, NJ, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 19, 2011 at home. Friends and family gathered on May 22 in his honor at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be held at Temple Emeth Shalom Cemetery in Cardiff, NJ at 10:30 a.m. on June 26, 2011 officiated by Rabbi Gordon Geller.

Born in New York City to the late Frank and Bertha ( Nee Weinerman) Steinberg, Alan graduated from City College of New York, earned his Master’s Degree in Experimental Psychology from Columbia University and completed his Doctorate in Physiology at The University of California at Berkeley where he studied carbohydrate metabolism in the brain. He was proud to have been a pioneer as a founding faculty member at Stockton State College, Pomona, NJ where he taught for over 30 years. He served as premedical advisor for countless students and delighted in the many exploits of his protégés.

Alan led a full, robust and meaningful life. As a ‘60s activist with family roots in the partisan resistance in Eastern Europe, he was actively involved in the free speech movement and supported social justice throughout his life. He integrated his passion for teaching and staunch support of labor movements by taking a leading role in unionizing the faculty and staff at Stockton College. Alan and his wife Joan were co-founders of the Atlantic County New School.

Those who knew Alan will recall his love of family and friends, his skill as a teacher, his enthusiastic engagement in his community, and his enjoyment of exploring science and the natural world. Alan grew connected to South Jersey where he got “sand in his shoes” and discovered the joys of the beach and boardwalk as well as the tricky tides of the back bay. Later in his career, he delighted in visiting and learning about the amazing flora and fauna of Costa Rica with students and family.

He enjoyed skiing in the Poconos, camping at Lake George, visiting the Jersey Shore, Michigan and California, and many other explorations. He found great friends and adventures in his community of Century Village East where he proudly served as President of his condominium building and was a vibrant leader on his tennis team. His teammates would always hear him and feel his presence. He would keep score as loud as he could from the other side, letting them know with his wry humor, how they could have had a better shot. Most of all, Alan made it enjoyable to be his partner in life - for his friends, for his wife, for his loving family. He had a keen sense of humor, a hearty laugh, great intelligence and a kind heart. His hugs were strong and from the heart. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Alan is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan C. Steinberg (Nee Mazel) of Deerfield Beach, FL; daughters Amy Levine-Barbera (Tom) of Ventnor, NJ and Robin Steinberg (Charlene Knowles) of Santa Cruz, CA; son David Steinberg (Bethany) of Ann Arbor, MI; grandchildren Casey Levine, Morgan Levine, Eliza Steinberg, Noah Steinberg, and Sophie Steinberg; eight greatgrandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild; brother Merl Steinberg ( Vera); sister- in- laws Bonnie Lanoil (Nee Mazel) of Englewood, CO and Barbara Mazel of Deerfield Beach, FL; nieces Hilary Brigg of Tampa, FL, Jennifer Levine (Aaron) of Parker, CO, and Elise Saltzberg ( David) of Pikesville, MD; nephews Kenneth Frankel of Boca Raton, FL, Brian Lanoil (Lisa Stein) of Edmonton, Alberta, CAN, and Rick Steinberg (Hillary Arnold)of West Orange, NJ; Alan was predeceased by his sister and brother-in-law, Bea and Jack Frankel of Margate, FL.
