The 20-minute service is part of a custom to visit the cemetery during the month of Elul, particularly prior to the High Holidays, to strengthen one's ties with the rituals and faith of our ancestors. The origin for this was in the belief that the righteous dead intercede for the living before the throne of God.

"This is a most dignified way of remembering and honoring our loved ones, regardless of where they are interred," Rabbi Winter said.
