Holocaust Survivor Donald Berkman to Discuss his Book at JCC

Donald (Chipkin) Berkman will be at the Katz JCC, to discuss his book, “Two Voices, A Mother and Son, Holocaust Survivors,” on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m.

Don Berkman Don Berkman His book is the story of Sara Baron Berkman Chipkin, a young woman alone in the woods with a toddler, continually vigilant and brave, struggling to keep her son safe in the killing fields of Ponar. Sara was the essence of a survivor, her will power, a sixth sense, her intelligence, a mother’s boundless love, driving her determination that at least the two of them – mother and son – would survive, despite the loss of her husband and at least forty-eight members of her family.

“Two Voices” adds to the literature about child Holocaust survivors and their resilience, despite the traumas suffered during the Holocaust.

Don and his wife, Nan, live in Margate. Both are generous supporters of Holocaust education, providing scholarships for many teachers and graduate students. Don also supports the Board of Jewish Education and programming at the Jewish Community Center about child survivors of the Holocaust.
