SCHWAB, GAZELLA (GUS) MITTELMAN

Schwab, Gazella (Gus) Mittelman of Margate passed away on July 21. Gus was born March 10, 1923 in Atlantic City to G. Jacob and Mollie Starkman. Except for two years in the late 1940s, Gus lived all her life on Absecon Island.

In 1941, Gus graduated from Atlantic City High School. After a three year courtship, Gus married Joel Mittelman on March 25, l945. They lived happily together for 47 years until Joel’s death in September, 1992. Their marriage produced Gus’s three children who survive her: Lee Mittelman Weinstock, Donna Mittelman and Daniel Mittelman.

Gus began working as a real estate agent in 1962. In the 1970s Gus worked as the adult program director at the Jewish Community Center in Margate. After eight years at the JCC, Gus returned to the real estate business until retiring in 1999.

Gus spent her formative years with her family at Community Synagogue in Atlantic City. Throughout Gus’s adult years, she was a member of Beth Judah synagogue in Ventnor. In the 1990s, Gus was a member of the executive board of Beth Judah.

In addition to her children, Gus is survived by her four beloved grandchildren: Scott O’Beda, Todd O’Beda, Max Mittelman and Jane Mittelman. Gus is also survived by her dear sister, Bernice Scarpa. Gus’s brother, Leon Starkman, predeceased her. Gus leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews; her sister-in-law, Gertrude Ludwig; her brother-in-law, Bernard Shuman and close friend, Anita Neustadter. Gus is also survived by her husband of 12 years, Paul Schwab, and his daughter, Lisa Schwab.

Graveside services were held last Sunday at the Rodef Sholom Cemetery, Egg Harbor Twp. Donations may be made in Gus’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
