When Gail Mackler-Carlino was my broadcasting colleague back in the 1970s and ‘80s, I got to meet two of the nicest people – her parents, Al Mackler and his wife, Ruth. They were real menschen and after her father’s death, Gail founded the Al Mackler Foundation to perpetuate his memory. That was some 14 years ago, and from that group emerged the annual race and walk scheduled this year for July 25 on the AC Boardwalk in front of the Hilton Hotel Casino. This is more than a physical event, it is a fund raiser which, since its inception, has raised more than $150,000 for pediatric cancer research at Hadassah Hospital in Israel, Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital and St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital. This month’s race and walk will add many more dollars to this ongoing research, which involves other research institutes. “My father was a teacher when he died of cancer. And during his illness he told us that if any money came in because of him, he wanted it to go toward pediatric cancer research and his dying wish came true,” declared Gail. Participants and the public can donate from $100 to $2,500 and what ever donation they make their name will appear on t-shirts worn in the race. Registration is $20 in advance and $25 on race day, said Gail. Honorary chairperson is Congressman Frank LoBiondo (2-R). For more information Gail, senior Vice President Investments at Janney Montgomery-Scott LLC, will be glad to hear from you at 601-2509 or 1- 800-346-1446.
PHYSICAL THERAPIST DR.JODI HANDLER CAN HELP SENIORS PREVENT FALLS
The statistics are grim and the pains more hurtful for the American senior citizens 65-years and older who will experience a fall this year and next. But an area expert can help our older population avoid an unfortunate and preventable falling accident. Jodi Handler and her staff held a session last week with an attendance of 50 to discuss ways to prevent serious falls, and she is available to help seniors remain on the safe side. There are many obstacles in a home that can cause an accident and Handler identified them during her seminar. She can be reached at 484-0686.
GOING GREEN WILL SAVE BETH EL SYNAGOGUE MANY ENERGY DOLLARS WITH SOLAR PANELS
With energy costs continuing to be sky high due to heavy demands – especially this hot and humid summer and air conditioning going full blast – installing solar panels is one way to reduce the electric bill. That’s the direction Margate’s Beth El Synagogue is taking with solar panels installed on its huge roof and in the maintenance area. To formally launch this effort the synagogue will hold a celebration Sunday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m., asking congregants to purchase a solar panel dedicated in honor of someone or life-cycle events for the building’s generation system. There are 286 panels, each one able to generate 175 watts from full sunlight. Rabbi Aaron Krauss says, “Be proud and act now by calling Joyce in the synagogue office at 823-2725.” For a donation of Ten Chai, $180 per panel, an adoption plaque will be permanently and prominently displayed at Beth El.
SELMA BOUDOV AND RENEE BULGER DEFEND ISRAEL, CAPE MAY BIGOT VILLIFIES ISRAEL
Two letters strongly supporting Israel’s right to defend itself and a third letter condemning Israel appeared recently in the Press of Atlantic City, which caught HM’s attention. Some Jewish Times and HM readers from out of the area who don’t get the Press would be interested in those letters. Letters from Northfield resident Selma Boudov and Galloway Township resident Renee Bulger, supported Israel while a third letter from a Cape May city man whose name we’ll never publish, continues his monthly anti- Semitic and anti-Israel diatribe not realizing in the minds of Muslim radicals, that as a Christian he is an infidel as are Jews and other non- Muslims. Boudov says, “Wake up world to the plans Muslims have in mind (the destruction of the Jewish nation).” Bulger writes condemning former and disgraced White House correspondent Helen Thomas’ contention that Israel’s recognition in 1947 by the United Nations mandate resulted in the displacement of Arab Israelis. “No one was displaced,” wrote Bulger. The truth is if they did leave they did so at the urging of the Arabs.

As a founding board member of Richard Stockton College’s “Center of Successful Aging,” I have to praise Center Director and Professor of Psychology and Gerentology David Burdick for keeping the center alive and working to promote its objectives through a series of informative seminars and speeches. Scheduled next Wednesday, July 7, is a presentation by Associate Professor of Social Work and the Center’s Research Chair Dr. Lisa Cox, which begins with a breakfast from 7:20 to 9 a.m. “Cox will explore how a guided autobiography can help to more fully understand the meaning of life for seniors, “ stated Burdick, adding, “this a highly informative and worthwhile session to attend, which is free and open to the public.” Call Burdick at 652-4311.
