Maxwell (Sonny) Goldberg
Goldberg, Maxwell (Sonny), 83, of Margate, and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., passed away Monday morning, Maty 10, at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Mr. Goldberg played an important role in the growth of the Atlantic City casino industry. He and Milton Neustadter co-owned the Howard Johnson’s Hotel, which would become Caesars Boardwalk Regency in 1978 and then Caesars Atlantic City.. He also was the former owner of the Steel Pier, which is now The Pier Shops at Caesars.
He was born and raised in Atlantic City, graduated from Atlantic City High School, and is a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served as a flight engineer.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Shirley (nee Blumberg); his daughter Anne Neustadter and her husband Michael; his son Roy Goldberg and wife Joanne; sisters Tedda Zakroff, Terrie Bergman and Ronnie Alper and 6 grandchildren, Scott, Julie and Katie Neustadter, Jonathan, Janey and Michael Goldberg.
A Masonic Ceremony followed by funeral services was held Wednesday, May 12, at Temple Emeth Shalom, in Margate.
