MELVIN SCHIFF FELDMAN, 89

Melvin Schiff Feldman, 89, passed away on April 3, 2010 at Shore Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family. Born March 23, 1921 in Jersey City, New Jersey, to the late Samuel and Mary Feldman, he was the youngest of three sons.

Mel grew up in Jersey City and attended Etz Chaim Yeshiva in Brooklyn. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1938 where he captained the basketball team. A member of the Class of 1942 at the University of Pennsylvania, he earned his degree from the Wharton School. Upon graduation, he married his childhood sweetheart, Evelyn Ginsberg, of Union City.

During World War II, he served in the 57th Signal Battalion of the U. S. Army, serving in North Africa, Italy, France, Austria, and Germany. In 1947, he and his family moved to Margate, where he was president of the South Jersey division of the Federal Wine and Liquor Company, an importer and wholesaler of wines and spirits, until his retirement in 1978.

He was president of Congregation Beth Judah, twice, and served on the boards of the Jewish Community Center and Seashore Gardens. He was very active in the Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May Counties, the Jewish War Veterans and the Avoda Club of Atlantic County.

A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of nearly 68 years, Evelyn, son David (Kathryn) of Bryn Mawr, PA, daughter Susan, of Somers Point, three grandchildren, Alexander, Peter, Caroline, and many nieces and nephews.

Services were held Wednesday April 7, at Congregation Beth Judah, in Ventnor. Inter ment was in Beth Kehillah Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township. Shiva is being observed at the family residence.
