George Kripitz “George Kay” “Gig” 83, of Atlantic City, died peacefully on April 4, 2010 after a long illness. He was born on September 8, 1926 in Philadelphia to the late Henry and Esther Kripitz. He was a graduate of Overbrook High School and attended Temple University and University of Denver. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII in Okinawa.
George followed his parents to Atlantic City in 1947 where his father and uncle had a clothing business. George acquired a huge following selling clothes to homemakers after the war. He opened George Kay Fashions at Kentucky and Pacific Avenues and was best known for his selection of Garland sweaters and pleated plaid skirts. George had a wonderful following and was loved dearly by all his customers. In 1974 he opened the first true discount store in Absecon – George Kay’s Fashion Outlet, which remained in Absecon until 1994 when he retired.
After retirement, he devoted his life to his family and golf. George and his three sons made a formidable foursome and enjoyed playing at many golf courses throughout the country.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his brother Edwin and former wife, Sally Salins. He is survived by his loving family. His beloved wife of 37 years, Jean. Hank (Faye) Kripitz, Jeff (Marta) Kripitz, David (Pam) Kripitz, Nancy Kripitz, Louis (Marlene) Rich, Kenny Rich, Claudia Grillo, Ted (Janet) Rich. He will be sadly missed by his ten adoring grandchildren: Adam, Emily, Alex, and Sammy Kripitz; Glenn, Jordan, Hank, Jessica, Dylan, and Carly Rich. He will also be missed by his aide and companion Michael Khan. He will be remembered with much affection by his many nephews and nieces. George was a long time member of Linwood Country Club, Avoda, Jewish War Veterans Post 39, and Congregation Beth Israel.
Services were held Tuesday, April 6, at Congregation Beth Israel. Northfield. Interment was in Beth Israel Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township. Contributions in his memory may be made to JOAS, 1102 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic City or any of the above organizations. A special thank you to all of the medical staff on the 6th floor Harmony Unit at Atlantic Care for their care and compassion during his stay. Arrangements were by ROTH-GOLDSTEINS’ MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Atlantic City.
