Rwandan Genocide Witnesses Share Their Experiences
Carl Wilkens
The interactive workshop, presented by the museum and the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center of the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey, is designed for early childhood elementary, middle and high school educators.
Major Beardsley, of the Royal Canadian Army, served as a member of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda before and during the Rwandan genocide. American Carl Wilkens refused to leave during the genocide. He was the only American to stay in Rwanda during the genocide.
Topics to be discussed include the challenges of introducing the concept of genocide in the classroom, upstanders – one person can make a difference, dealing with perpetrators and victims and bullying, problem solving, celebrating diversity, protecting the environment and human behavior.

There is no cost to attend the workshop, which runs from 9:15 a.m. until 2:15 p.m., and also includes free lunch. New Jersey educators receive 5PDH (Professional Development Hours).
