Integrative Care To Help Increase Quality of Life

Submitted by Atlantic Hematology/Oncology Group

From the very instant my family doctor told me that I had cancer and needed to make an appointment with an oncologist, my world was permanently changed. The “C” word inspired fear of a terrible outcome and treatments that were worse than the disease. Fortunately, my doctor referred me to Dr. Hollander at Atlantic Hematology/Oncology Group (AHOG), a very special integrative cancer care practice. I learned that Dr. Hollander was named in the GUIDE TO AMERICA’S TOP PHYSICIANS (Consumer Research Council of America) and in New Jersey Monthly Magazine’s TOP DOCTORS.

When I made the call for my initial appointment, fear turned to relief as I was greeted by one of their “Directors of First Impressions” (receptionists) on the phone and was immediately treated like family. Dr. Hollander went out of her way to accommodate me that very week! I was amazed by the warmth and ambiance of the facility. All the members of the clinical care team – their nurse practitioners, oncology certified nurses, and medical assistants – truly made me feel like a member of their family who happened to have a medical problem, not like just a disease on legs.

Their integrative care team was also introduced to me. They told me about how I could have vibroacoustic (sound) therapy, massage therapy, healing touch and psychological counseling to lessen side effects of the disease and treatment while increasing my quality of life.

I felt very confident in the thoroughness of my work-up and the combined expertise that was assembled to address my cancer. The team took the time to explain to me all about my diagnosis and the various tests to allow Dr. Hollander to formulate my treatment plan. They even contacted my insurance company for approvals and made the various appointments for me.

Once my scans and other tests were completed, I returned to the integrative cancer center to discuss with Dr. Hollander and the clinical team what treatments they recommended. After making sure that I understood everything, they even encouraged me to get a second opinion at a university hospital if I wanted. They collaborate with centers such as Fox Chase, University of Penn, Jefferson, and others. I opted for Atlantic Hematology Oncology Group – and that has made all the difference!

In addition to my treatments, I was also introduced to nutritional counseling, vibroacoustic therapy (SoundJourney), and many other therapies to help with fatigue, stress reduction and the various side effects of my disease and treatment.

The center truly lived up to its promise of treating me like family. There is even a kitchen for the patients. One Sunday when I needed extra special care, my family and I were treated to lox and bagels.

I was so impressed by how Dr. Hollander and her entire team catered to me and my family in this life-threatening crisis! Best of all, I made it through my treatments with hardly any side effects, I beat the odds, and I have been disease-free for many years!
