Free Brunch & Learn
The next JCC Brunch and Learn will take place on Tuesday, January 12, at 10:30 a.m. This month Rabbi David Weis will be the featured speaker. He will discuss current events in Israel and how decisions made 6,000 miles away can effect Jews living in the United States and around the world. Following the discussion will be the film, The Jews of Libya. This thoughtprovoking documentary, explores the disappearance of Jews in Libya over the course of the nation’s history by tracing a family’s comings and goings. In the third century B.C., a thriving community of Jewish people made their homes and built their lives in Libya. But by the dawn of the 21st century, not a single Jew remained. Brunch & Learn Events are free and open to the entire community. A bagel brunch will be served. Brunch & Learn is made possible by a generous grant from Lighthouse Planning Consultants. Please RSVP to Josh Cutler at 609-822- 1167 x 138 or email JCutler@jccatlantic.org.
You’ll have a Month to finish This Triathlon
Looking for a way to start off 2010 with a challenge?
Here’s one that will raise money for a good cause and improve your fitness: The 4th Annual CONTACT Cape- Atlantic Triathlon & Duathlon.
Best of all, you’ll have a whole month – January 18 to February 18 – to complete the event: a 2.4- mile swim...a 112- mile bike ride...and a 26-mile run (duathlon is any two of the events). The registration donation is $25 and is co-sponsored by the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center.
Competitors can substitue gym events for the swimming, biking and running events by documenting how many laps they swim or aquasize classes they take for the swim leg of the triathlon; how many miles they bike, step or row for the bicycling portion; and how many miles they walk/run, use the elliptical or take aerobics classes for the marathon section. (An acrobics class, for instance, equates at a 2-mile run.)
Everyone who enters receives a T-shirt, and everyone who finishes will receive an award. A list of triathlon finishers will be posted and an awards ceremony will take place at the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center, 18th and Simpson avenue, Ocean City, on February 27.
The triathlon/duathlon is a fund-raiser for CONTACT Cape-Atlantic, a nonprofit volunteer group and United Way agency that makes daily telephone reassurance calls – more than 64,000 a year! – to help its elderly and disabled clients live independently at home.
Registration forms are required and are available at the Ocean City Aquatic & Fitness Center, or by calling CONTACT at 823-1850 or 463-4564, or e-mail CONTACT at contact-c-a@comcast.net or on our website www.contactcape atlantic.org.

Tom Brokaw to Speak at Stainton Society Brunch
The man who brought the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Dalai Lama and every president since Lyndon Johnson into our living rooms is coming to southern New Jersey to help the Shore Memorial Hospital Health Foundation say thank you to its many supporters.
Award-winning broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw will be the featured speaker at the Shore Memorial Hospital 2009/2010 Stainton Society Brunch. For 21 years Brokaw served as anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News and prior to that was the anchor of NBC News’ Today program. On May 2, 2010, Brokaw will offer brunch attendees a view of the world through a reporter’s eyes, and pay tribute to the selflessness and dedication shown by members of “The Greatest Generation.”
Mr. Brokaw will join the prestigious list of past Stainton Society brunch speakers including, former First Lady Laura Bush, Robin Roberts, Bob Woodruff, and Rudy Giuliani.
The Stainton Society is the largest fundraising organization in the Shore Memorial Health Foundation family, and remains a critical part of Shore Memorial’s overall development effort.
Last year, the Stainton Society kicked off a multi-year campaign to raise $2 million in support of SHORE TOMORROW, the largest expansion project in the history of Shore Memorial Hospital. The project, which includes a new four-story Surgical Pavilion, new lobby and main entrance and expanded parking facilities, will transform Shore Memorial into an ultra-modern medical center with one of the finest surgical facilities in southern New Jersey.
The Stainton Society is committed to helping fund this important expansion in order to meet the surgical needs of the area’s growing population. The annual brunch is a thank you to donors for their contributions and dedication to helping Shore Memorial offer patients the best in medical care.
For more information on joining the Stainton Society, please call the Health Foundation office at 609-653-3800.
