Are your teenagers on a healthy path as far as eating properly to avoid obesity and other problems that could affect them in their adult years? This critical question is answered in a recent New York Times column by feature writer Jane E. Brody quoting from a book, “Eat Fresh Food: Awesome Recipes for Teen Chefs” written by award-winning chef Rozanne Gold (Brooklyn resident) in collaboration with Linwood nutritionist Helen Kimmel – along with some input from her children, Ian and Robyn. NYU nutrition professor Marion Nestle who said,”I’ve long argued that the best way to get people to eat more healthfully is to teach kids to cook.” One of Ms. Gold’s young helpers, Ian, said he learned so much about fruits and vegetables “and how easy and fun cooking can be.” Gold writes – and we’re sure others agree – “Food should be celebrated not demonized.” Copies of the article are available at:

YES! NOT TOO LATE FOR FLU SHOT BUT THE SWINE FLU SHOT IS ONLY A MAYBE, ADVISES DR. IRA STEIN
HM’s medical consultant, Dr. Ira Stein, medical director of the H.G. Rosin Senior Center (JOAS) in Atlantic City, says, yes, it’s still time to get a flu shot since the flu season goes through to March next year. As for obtaining a swine flu shot, Dr. Stein says we’re past the critical time so it’s a “maybe” when it’s time to decide to be innoculated. It wouldn’t hurt says Dr. Stein. There has been a substantial number of regular flu Illnesses and statewide quite a number of swine flu cases, keeping hospital emergency rooms busy taking care of those who have no personal care physician.
FATHER/SON PHYSICIANS, DRS. STEPHEN & JEFFREY GOSIN SHED LIGHT ON VASCULAR DISEASE
I was intrigued by an article in the recent Atlantic County Women’s edition authored by the father and son duo physicians, Dr. Stephen Gosin and his son, Dr. Jeffrey S. Gosin, locally specializing in vascular diseases. They said that, “Vascular disorders affect millions of people nationwide (and locally) and can cause leg pain, leg swelling and other symptoms.” And they added, “Certain vascular conditions can increase risk for stroke, limb loss, or even death.” Both physicians are are board certified in this specialty and for a consultation they can be reached at 927-VEIN (8346). They advise anyone with any of the above symptoms should not ignore them.
“WE NEED YOUR HELP” URGES MUSEUM OF WOODBINE HERITAGE EXEC.DIRECTOR JANE STARK
The Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage in Cape May County was founded and incorporated in 2001. Its Executive Director Jane Stark says, “It’s a living memorial to the 60-Russian Jewish men who first came (to Woodbine) to settle and build the community in 1891, and the multi-cultural heritage of the town . . . we continue to serve the community today as we approach the year 2010.” And she appealed, “We need your help financially to preserve this very special place as a cultural center and an important historical landmark.” She says further, “Each year we set our goals a little higher and reach a little further to touch more minds and hearts with the unique and documented history of Woodbine.” Sam Azeez’s son Michael and family have continued the fine work of the museum and its landmark synagogue, so “Become a member today,” urges Stark. The museum can be visited at its website www.thesam.org or reached by phone at 646- 9400.
DAVID SCHWARTZ WRITES HOW AMBASSADOR HOTEL GAVE WAY TO TROPICANA CASINO RESORT
Atlantic City’s Chelsea beachfront to Pacific avenue landscape was dominated for years by the massive Ambassador Hotel, but time and disrepair led to its demise and eventual demolition. It was replaced by the Tropicana Casino Resort, which has had its share of problems and the tragic collapse of a portion of the hotel’s garage. Former resort native David Schwartz and son of the late AC Press writer Sonny Schwartz is currently director of the Las Vegas Center for Gaming Research. He has written a two-part series on the history of the two properties. He details how the Tropicana evolved from the Ambassador’s demise, involving purchase of the empty structure before its demolition by local hotel operator Martin Ashner, and Ramada’s part in the history of the property. It’s an intriguing in-depth story that can be read at the Casino Connection Magazine’s website: http://casinoconnectionac. com/issue/december-2009/article/empire-builders. Schwartz is the author of “Roll the Bones: The History of Gambling,”.
