Joseph Chaikin

Joseph Chaikin died on Dec. 3 at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona after a sudden illness. Born July 14, 1924, Dr. Joe grew up in Camden, NJ. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia and received his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy. He was the first fulltime doctor in Brigantine and had attended patients for almost 60 years until his death. He was recently honored by the city for his long and distinguished service to the community.

Well-loved by his patients and his colleagues, Dr. Joe was an inspiration to his family, friends, and the community. Professionally he had served as president of the Atlantic County Osteopathic Society, president of the medical staff of Bacharach Institute of Rehabilitation, and Medical Director of Absecon Manor, and was also an attending physician at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and Seashore Gardens Living Center.

In addition he was president of the Brigantine Jewish Community Center as well as president of the World Playground Toastmaster Club. He was a Master Mason of Belcher Lodge. Joseph Chaikin is survived by his wife of 60 years Betty, son Dr. Harry Chaikin and his wife Sarah of Brigantine and their three children Katie, Hannah and Carolyn; daughter Jamie and her husband William Boutin of Somerset, N.J., and their two children Otto and Scotty; and daughter Gale and her husband Steven Donohue of Langhorne, Pa., and their two children Allie and Michael. He is also survived by great-grandson Anthony Peters-Donohue.

Services were held Dec. 6 at Temple Beth Shalom, in Brigantine. Interment was in Beth Kehillah Cemetery in Egg Harbor Twp. Contributions may be made to Bacharach Hospital Foundation and the Golda Meir Chapter of Hadassah. Arrangements were by ROTHGOLDSTEINS’ MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Atlantic City.
