BARBARA ALTMAN STEPS DOWN AFTER GREAT RUN

For two decades Barbara Altman, with her husband, Ed, have successfully staged the annual Atlantic City Boardwalk Marathon. But recently, the Altmans passed the torch to the Katz JCC (Margate) for the 51st running Nov.15 at 8:30 a.m. Barbara and Ed deserve the gratitude of the area’s racing community for a job well done, but time has come for them to step back from an event that over the years required lots of dedication and hard work. Mazel Tov to them. The event – besides the major marathon – includes a half marathon, 10K, 2- mile walk and Kids Fun Run. For information visit www.jccatlanticcity/marathon.org or call the JCC (822-1167) and ask for Patti.

CASA A STRONG VOICE FOR CHILDREN, SAYS ADVOCATE HAROLD ‘BOOTS’ POTLER

There are in our area and elsewhere many abused and neglected children in the foster care system, and until recent years they had no voice. Now they do – CASA – of Atlantic and Cape May Counties Court “Appointed Special Advocates.” The group is located all over the U.S. and operating locally for nine years, says Harold “Boots” Potler, a board member and fund raiser. His wife, Arlene, is an advocate for one of the children. “We are honored and privileged to be part of this great volunteer organization,” declared the Potlers. “Trained volunteers speak on behalf of these abused children,” said Karen DeRosa, CASA’s Community Development Director, adding, “CASA ensures that the needs and best interests of these children (700 in the two counties) are met.” Meeting these needs can improve the ability of Family Court Judges regarding these children. DeRosa and the Potlers said that the program addresses one of the most compelling problems of our society, narrowing it to one small child and allowing us to enter that child’s life and make a difference. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer should call CASA at 601- 7800. “We need volunteers,” said Potler and DeRosa.

BILL VILENSKY – PHYSICIAN, PHARMACIST, EXPERT PHOTOGRAPHER – EXHIBITING WORKS AT JCC

In his travels around the world as a nationally known forensic scientist, expert witness, consultant and educator in pain control and drug addiction, Dr. Bill Vilensky, a physician and pharmacist who also studied pharmacology, used his photographic skills to collect hundreds of spectacular photos. An exhibit of his favorites opened at a reception last week at Margate’s Katz Jewish Community Center and will remain displayed until Wednesday Nov. 25 free to the public with the photos for sale. Bill, with his helpful wife, Joyce (Cookie), is an awardwinning photographer focusing on his worldwide travels and underwater diving experiences and award-winning juried exhibits in Florida and New Jersey, including the Noyes Museum of Art. He captured his pictures with his digital single lens reflex camera combined with the new art form of GICLEE archival printing. All his mats and frames are adaptable for size and color and textured finishes from canvas to water color. Bill is a professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of N.J. and lectures around the U.S., Canada and Mexico. “In my medical retirement, I looked for and found digital fine art photography and I’m excited and happy with my new find,” he told HM. One of his prized pictures was taken by his scuba-diving wife, Joyce, in the the Great Barrier Reef off Australia. At last week’s exhibit he sold several photos. Some of his works include landscapes, a Margate beach scene with the Taj Mahal in the background, animals, flowers and birds.

WITH UNIQUE MATH TEMPLE EMETH SHALOM CALCULATES LOW COST OF MEMBERSHIP

In all my years as a journalist, including my authorship of HM, we have had our share of unique stories but the following is very unique as to how Margate’s Temple Emeth Shalom calculates its cost of membership. Rabbi

Gordon Geller says one way of keeping operational costs low is to have an all volunteer staff, which has worked. Congregation President

Marc Needleman did some calculating and the bottom line was it costs a very low $6.70 a week to belong to the Reform shul, “Which is equal to three gallons of gas or one lunch or one tip for dinner per week.” And, he adds, “In this sagging economy we are falling behind, but there is a rising number of unaffiliated Jews and we don’t want to lose our Jewish heritage,” which is why TES keeps it dues so low, emphasizes Rabbi Geller.
