Since its founding in 1992, the Richard Stockton College Holocaust Resource Center has had continued success under the leadership of the Dr.
Franklin H. Littell. Littell, recognized as one of the world's important Holocaust teachers, had been instrumental in founding the center with the aid of the area's top Jewish leaders. After his retirement he was granted the high honor of Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Holocaust and Genocide Studies. And for his distinguished service to the center, the late Dr. Littell's life will be celebrated this Sunday (Oct. 18) at a remembrance program on campus at the Townsend Residential Life Center from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Speakers include Dr. Michael Berenbaum, Dr. Hubert Locke, Dr. Richard Rubenstein, Stockton President Dr.Herman J. Saatkamp, Jr. and others. Gail Rosenthal has been the Center's first and only executive director. "He was a remarkable man as well as my teacher and colleague," said Leo Lieberman, Holocaust teacher at the center. Dr. Littell was an ordained Protestant minister, who spent 10 years in post-war Germany as chief Protestant Religious Adviser in the High Command assigned to de-Nazification during the occupation. Dr.Littell viewed the Holocaust as the plumb line for assessing the moral and religious state of human society during the 20th century. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dr. Marcia Sachs Littell, an educator at the Center.
STOCKTON PROFESSOR RON CAPLAN SAYS HEALTH CARE WITHOUT PUBLIC OPTION WON'T WORK
Taking a strong stance against having health insurance reform without a public option would be harmful and not helpful is the opinion of Stockton College Assistant Professor of Health Ron Caplan of Northfield. HM greatly respects the views of Caplan who makes his point by quoting the late Princeton and world scholar, Albert Einstein. Declared Einstein many years ago, "It is crazy to do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result." Caplan's reaction, "And yet, if we pass health care reform without an option, we will be doing precisely what Einstein said." He goes on to say, "For profit, private insurance companies have covered the most people and paid the most claims but they have routinely denied legitimate claims, cancelled the policies when people got sick and refused coverage to people who are sick, which has rationed care." Caplan voiced his views in a letter to the Press, which gives the public something to think about. Caplan and his wife, graphic artist, Jackie, live in Northfield.
LORNA COHEN'S SON FRED, 51, PITCHES WAY TO SOFTBALL GOLD AT MACCABIAH GAMES
At age 51, you may think, Fred Cohen would hang up his glove and cleats and retire from softball, a competitive and sometimes physical game. No, that would be too early for Fred, who lives with his family in Deerfield, Illinois. Qualifying for last summer's Maccabiah games in Israel, Fred pitched his team to a gold medal. He and his teammates received extensive home area media coverage in a newspaper story headlined in huge print . . . "Golden opportunity . . .Deerfield's Cohen, HP's Saslow Pitch USA to victory.. . . The story began with this lead - Deerfield's Fred Cohen has come quite a long way from his days competing in 12-inch softball during the 1970s in Philadelphia, and playing fast pitch in Highland Park. He was quite an athlete. His mother is Lorna Cohen of Longport.

MIKE CASEL RECIPIENT OF TOP AWARD FROM EDITORS OF INSTITUTIONAL INVESTOR NEWS
Winning this prestigious award occurred because former local resident Mike Casel deserved the honor. HM can say unequivocally this area has produced some very bright and creative people who have moved on to top professional positions after leaving here for college. One of those former residents is Mike Casel, who made his mark when he graduated Atlantic City High School as 1992 class valedictorian. He earned a double degree in engineering and economics at Swarthmore (Pa.) College, where he met his wife, Kristen. In recognition of his accomplishments, Casel was recently presented with the "Rising Star of Foundations and Endowments" by the editors of Institutional Investor News. Mike, who currently is a Chartered Financial Analyst and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst, is director of Investments at Haverford (Pa.) College where he is involved in its endowment fund. He is the son of Bernard and Brenda Casel of Margate.
