Whitney Ullman says, "I've always wanted to be a voice for the people," and now she has a chance to do so as a Republican candidate for the Galloway Township Council in this November's election after winning a GOP spot in a recent primary contest. She tells HM, "It makes sense for me to seek election since I'm a great fit to serve in local government in Galloway since I take a common sense approach to helping my community." Whitney has perfect credentials to serve in government and goes to Washington, D.C. to represent, as president, the New Jersey Women Business Owners, Atlantic County Chapter, attending meetings for training on public policy. She is also president of the Atlantic City Jaycees and is active in numerous community organizations, such as a volunteer in the Ms. Atlantic City Pageant. Whitney is a graduate of the Christy Whitman (former N.J. governor) Leadership Program and professionally is a fashion jeweler and a nutritional healing counselor. She is the wife of area optometrist Marc Ullman and the daughter of Sharlene Pisnoy, a Galloway Township resident who works at the county's information office in Northfield.

LEO SCHOFFER'S BOOK ON FORMER AC JEWISH BUSINESSES IS FASCINATING HISTORIC COLLECTION

By now word is out that after a year in preparation, Leo Schoffer's much anticipated book, "A Nostalgic Look At Jewish Businesses In And Around Atlantic City," can be purchased for $54 at the Federation office in Margate in the Jewish Community Center. Proceeds from the book sales will benefit Jewish day school education. The volume displays priceless photos - going back over100 years - of Jewish owned businesses in and around Atlantic City. In the book's preface HM extracts a portion of the opening words by its editor and catalyst, Leo Schoffer: "We recognize that the special history and tremendous growth of Atlantic City during the pre-casino era of the Twentieth Century was fostered by people of many racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds - African Americans, Italians and Irish. All share a very important place in the history of Atlantic City, deserving recognition. This book is intended to preserve the legacy of one such group, the Jewish community, and the integral role it played in the business culture of Atlantic City." The book was published by Rob Huberman and his Margatebased ComteQ firm. Other members of the publication team were art director Susan Weis, contributing writer Judge Gerald Weinstein, production assistant Kathleen Boyle and graphic artist Jackie Caplan. In addition to publishing the book, Rob produced a 15-minute DVD of the more than 350 photos, accompanied to music and narration. "Working with Leo Schoffer on this exciting and significant community project was very enjoyable and the standing ovation the DVD received from the 250 people in attendance at the banquet at Linwood CC was extremely gratifying," said Huberman. The book and video can be ordered at www.acjewishbusinessbook.com.

DAVID LEAVY PROUD "POSTER BOY" OF NEW ARMC CANCER CENTER ON ENGLISH CREEK RD.

With his photo appearing on full pages of the Jewish Times, Press of AC and Gannett Atlantic County Weeklies, fronting the new ARMC Cancer Center at English Creek Road, David Leavy was the logical person for this honor. He told HM, "I was honored when AtlantiCare asked me to be their 'Poster Boy' for the new facility and as a nine year survivor of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) I understand the value of state-of-the-art medical care. We are very fortunate to have this facility opening in Atlantic County because no longer will those who are in need have to travel long distances for complete cancer treatment." Mazel Tov to Leavy for his selection and AtlantiCare for this significant contribution to the fight against cancer. Leavy and his wife, Janet, residents of Margate, are fully involved in the battle against cancer. Janet is a board member and corresponding secretary of the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Fund (RNS) and an active volunteer for Gilda's Club of South Jersey with David a strong supporter of both groups.

RUTH GOLD ONE OF RECENT RECIPIENTS OF CULTURAL ALLIANCE'S 2009 ENCORE AWARDS

HM thanks Emma Todd, Rosin Senior Center Bookbindery Coordinator for informing us about the recent honors to Ruth Gold (Margate) as one of the South Jersey Cultural Alliance's 2009 14th annual Paul Aiken Encore Awards. "Ruth is well deserving of this honor," said Todd, noting that Ruth is curator of the Atlantic Heritage Center in Somers Point. Former Atlantic County Executive Richard Squires, a cultural supporter, presented the award to Gold. Todd, in talking about Ruth's other accomplishments said, "In addition to her work at the museum, Ruth is a valued member of the JOAS-sponsored Myriam's Dream Bookbindery, where she is a skilled printer." Mazel Tov to Ruth for her honor and best wishes to her for her work at the bindery, where they restore old books, a great art and skill closely associated to a cultural activity.
