IN EVERY RESPECT JUST CALL TALENTED DR. BILL VILENSKY, D.O.- DR. DIVERSITY
There's a good reason why HM likes to refer to
Dr. William Vilensky, D.O. as Dr. Diversity. Let me explain. We've known Dr.Vilensky since his high school days at ACHS with a talent for math and the sciences - which ultimately led to a multifaceted career as an osteopathic physician and in the field of pharmacology and as a world renowned expert in substance abuse. In fact he's had a spectacular career. HM could write volumes on his many accomplishments and honors in both his fields. This has led to the most distinguished tribute to Dr. Bill's extraordinary career - worldwide selection by Dr. Thomas A. Cavalieri, dean of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine, as their "2009 Physician of the Year Award." A very prestigious merit badge. Also honored at the college's recent conference in Atlantic City with their Appreciation Award was Dr. John LaRatta, D.O. and Dr. Allan Carr, D.O. as the 2009-2010 president. In a conference profile on Vilensky, it summed up his brilliance stating, "careful attention to detail has been the hallmark of Vilensky's career as a clinician and now as an expert witness and instructor." Vilensky has had a formidable academic career. His diversity covers the fields of fine arts photographer, skier, gardener, certified scuba instructor and opera buff with his wife, Cookie Vilensky. They divide their time between Margate and Longboat Key, Fla. He recommends that life must include a sense of humor. "If you can't smile and you can't joke, then life is very dull."
IT'S BEEN A WEEK OF NACHUS FOR IMMEDIATE FAMILY OF HM COLUMNIST
My family last week had much to celebrate with the engagement of my granddaughter Ariana Gordon (NYC businesswoman) to David Stocker (NYC financial Planner). Ariana is the daughter of Arlene Gordon and the sister of Marissa Bernphal. There were also the college graduations of my daughter, Lori D. D'Allesio (ACCC) and her recent marriage to Mathew and the graduation of my granddaughter, Sarah Dryer, from Marymount Manhattan College, and my wife Charlotte's current visit to Israel to be with daughter Ellyn, son-in-law Yussi Yishai and our five grandchildren - Sivan, Oren, Dana and twin boys Idan and Mitan. Sarah is the daughter of Eve Dryer (Ventnor native) and Dr. Allan Goldberg, Ph.D. Wow, a lot for one family and lots of nachos for all of us. Attending the New York festivities were my nephews Peter "Simcha" Reich and his wife, Jennifer; Dr. Larry Reich and his wife, Eileen Reich (Margate) their three children - Rachel, Leana and Bella-Rose. Also Aaron, brother of Ariana and his wife, Danielle, and baby Ella; cousin Shana Kaplan; former localite Idie Benjamin and her daughter, Tamar of White Plains, N.Y. We had a great time and next in January, Ariana's marriage to David.
ROB AND LAURA HUBERMAN PROUD TO BE AMONG ELITE SMALL U.S. GROUP GOING TO POLAND
An elite group of 10 American Jewish leaders including Margate residents Rob (Jewish book publisher) and Laura Huberman have been invited to visit Poland next month where they'll focus on the history of Polish Jews, many murdered by the Nazis. They will also focus on the complexity of Polish-Jewish relations in the past and present and the life of the Jewish community in Poland and the issues facing contemporary Poland. The visit begins June 17 in Warsaw and concludes June 24 in Krakow. The invitation came from Natalia Panowicz representing the "Forum for Dialogue Among Nations." Declared Huberman, "I and my wife Laura, are quite honored to be among such an elite group of American Jewish peers to be included in this significant journey." Upon their return the attendees will focus on improving American and American-Jewish relations with Poland.
SHERRY HOFFMAN REPORTS ON TWO MUSICAL EVENTS IN CELEBRATION OF MARGATE'S CENTENNIAL
Margate is in the midst of its 100 year anniversary and publicist Sherry Hoffman for the Margate Library says the facility will sponsor two related events this summer, which should musically liven up the celebration. "First in anticipation of the June 27 'Swing Dance Concert,' residents will be able to 'jump on the jive' by taking a series of four free swing dance lessons from Carrie Reilly and Edward Fisher of Follow Me Ballroom," said Hoffman. The lessons will take place in the Martin Bloom Pavilion and reservations, which are required, can be made by calling Charles Featherer at 822- 4700. The library will also present the 17-piece Blackmagic Swing Band, June 27, under the baton 822-4700. "This will be a time to swing and sway on this notable occasion," declared Hoffman.
IN THE HM SPOTLIGHT
Circle June 23 on your calendar. That's when the Trocki Jewish Community Day School honors Dr. Ira Helfgott (Ph.D.) and Herb Bierig with a special memorial tribute to Dr. Cyla Trocki- Videl (HM will have more details next month) ... This coming Monday, June 1, the AC Library's Older Adult series will be addressed by former Jewish Times graphics artist Jackie Caplan and her topic, "Affirmation Book," which will deal with how to make a "beautiful book."
