JCC presents special speaker from the National Catholic Center for Holocust Education
The presentation, "Catholic Educator from Israel Reflects on Holocaust Education for the 21st Century" will be free and open to the public on Monday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center's Nauy Hall, 501 North Jerome Avenue, Margate. Dr. Gemma Del Duca, S.C. was the first non-Israeli to receive the Excellence in Holocaust Education Award from Yad Vashem. She teaches on a regular basis at Yad Vashem's International School for Holocaust Studies. She explained her work in a recent interview. "There is an expression in Hebrew that speaks of 'tikkun olam,' which means the mending of the world, so when people begin to study about the Shoah, and especially as they study it in Israel and in Yad Vashem, I feel that they begin to cross borders." Sister Gemma has lived in Israel for the past 33 years. She recently said, "There was a great openness for dialogue that was encouraged through Vatican II, I am very interested in dialogue with the Jewish people." |
