From Stockton College Holocaust Resource Center to Yad Vashem - Jerusalem, Israel

From left are Dr. Mary Johnson, Stockton adjunct faculty, Mrs. Shulamit Imbar, Yad Vashem's Pedagogical Director, and . Gail Rosenthal, director of Stockton's Holocaust Resource Center.
Yad Vashem and Stockton's Holocaust Resource Center cooperate by presenting programs throughout the year. The "Unto Every Person There Is A Name" project has registered many of the local Holocaust survivors for Yad Vashem's data base of victims of the Shoah.

Representatives from Yad Vashem have presented workshops and seminars at Stockton.

This July, Gail Rosenthal and Fred Spiegel presented a workshop at Yad Vashem's Educators' Conference titled, "The Voices of Holocaust Survivors Live On through Literature, Photography, Podcasts, and Film." Dr. Mary Johnson, adjunct faculty at Stockton was a keynote speaker at the conference.

Fred Spiegel, Holocaust survivor, Holocaust Resource Center Executive Committee member, author, and speaker began the presentation by discussing his experiences as a speaker in middle and high schools. Fred's memoir, Once the Acacias Bloomed, is read by many students throughout New Jersey. After the book is read, Fred visits the schools to answer questions about his experiences in three concentration camps. His life paralleled Anne Frank's.

Rosenthal, director of Stockton's Holocaust Resource Center, presented strategies and techniques for educators to implement Holocaust and genocide studies across the curriculum for grades 5 - 12. This educational activity and presentation was based upon several projects initiated for Holocaust survivors by Stockton's Holocaust Resource Center.

The film, Alone No More: A Community Assists Holocaust Survivors was shown in the presentation. This film highlights the cooperative services provided for the Holocaust survivors of Atlantic and Cape May Counties, New Jersey.

Information about literature and photography that has been written and published through "The Writing as Witness Project" coordinated by Dr. Maryann McLoughlin was discussed; in addition, podcasts of Holocaust survivors she recorded for on-line use were shown. Through these projects, the voices of Holocaust survivors live on and enrich Holocaust education by providing written, visual, and oral testimonies.
