Leonard Berman to teach at BJE's summer adult education

Leonard Berman
Leonard Berman, who is returning to the shore by popular demand this summer, will offer a course called "The Longest Hate in History: Why have the Jews been the object of the most enduring hate in history." The class, which will be held at the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center in Margate, is scheduled to begin on Monday morning, July 14, and is sponsored by the Board of Jewish Education as part of its Summer at the Shore Adult Education program.

Berman will also address questions about some of the distinctive Jewish values that have caused a reaction, making Jews throughout history and to this day, the object of xenophobia.

At the hands of ancient pagans, the Nazis of the 20th century, some Christians, many in the Muslim world and in the extremes of the political left and right, there has long been an agenda that includes hatred of the Jews and disdain for the State of Israel. Why, what can be done and what is being done are all questions to be considered.

Professor Berman has been invited to teach at the shore during each of the past two summers and the BJE is proud to bring him back again. Says Barbara Lenett, BJE VP for Adult Education, "Len's following is tremendous. Long well known in the Philadelphia and Cherry Hill area we, are so pleased that he will be here also. He encourages commentary and sharing in his classes and always has terrific insights. Those of us who consider ourselves students of his always look forward to the vast topical knowledge he brings to any subject he aproaches."

Berman is the author of two books, the most recent being "A World of Secrets." In the late 1990s he published his first book "Consider Thy Servant." Both are historical novels dealing with some of the colorful and vibrant history of the Jews during the last two hundred years.

Classes will be held from 10 a.m. until 11:30 and will include a short break for coffee. Registration for the entire four-week series is $30. Checks should be made payable to the Board of Jewish Education. Please call 822-1854 for information.
