2008-12-04 / Obituaries

Alfred S. Cohen, beloved husband of the late Rose Aranoff Cohen, father of Janice Weinreb, Barbara Yasgur and Benay Nesher, died on Nov. 22 in Jerusalem, Israel, at age 90. Alfred was born in New Kensington, Pa. in 1918 where his family established a men's clothing store. Alfred and Rose lived in Ventnor and Atlantic City (in the Plaza) for over 50 years before moving to Israel. For the last five years they had been living in Jerusalem, Israel, where they were surrounded by two of their daughters, sons-inlaw and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Alfred was proud to live and work in the greater Atlantic City area. He was very involved in community affairs. Alfred was an active member of Rodef Shalom and served as its president immediately before making aliyah to Israel. He was active in Beth Judah and served as president of its Men's Club and was a founding member of the Young Israel of Margate. Alfred Cohen was the proprietor of Polly's Dress Shop, which was located on Atlantic Avenue for decades. He was an honest businessman with a pleasant personality and respectful of all; he earned the respect and loyalty of his customers. Alfred was a promoter of keeping the Atlantic City shopping district vibrant and attractive. As president of the Atlantic City Retail Merchants' Association he was a leader in the beautification of Atlantic Avenue in the 1980s. Alfred was president and a long time supporter of the Avoda Scholarship Fund. Alfred and Rose Cohen were board members of the Hebrew Academy of Atlantic County, where their children were among the first students in the school. They also promoted continuing adult Jewish learning, participated in community sponsored classes and regularly hosted Torah learning groups in their home. During World War II Alfred served as a corporal in the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army.

Alfred Cohen achieved the ideal which he extolled of having a good name. He epitomized the human qualities of the priestly Kohain as enumerated in Ethics of the Fathers; he loved peace, pursued peace and loved people. He was a kind, gentle and generous person always willing to help others. Alfred will be greatly missed by his large immediate and extended family and friends. He was the last survivor of his siblings, predeceased several years ago by his sister and business partner, Dorothy Levy, and recently by his brother Harold.

The Cohen family's strength and history will continue through the many seeds that Alfred and Rose planted around the world from New York to Israel to Sydney, Australia.
