      The story is told of the 18th Century Chassidic leader, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, who was returning home to Berditchev in a horse and carriage driven by a Jewish coachman. As they were drawing closer to Berditchev, they passed luscious fields strewn with newly cut bundles of hay.

      We are approaching the start of a new year, during which America will elect a new leader. As we use this time to reflect on our lives and how we lead them, I feel it would also be most appropriate to reflect on religion in general — and Judaism in particular — and how we lead our lives as Jews in this great American nation.

      Women's giving, on a national level, is the fastest growing component of annual campaigns, now representing more than 22 percent and rising every year. In our community we have two recognition programs for women's giving: for those giving a minimum gift of $1,800 there is the Pomegranate level and for a minimum gift of $5,000 there is the Lion of Judah.

      On a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning members of Congregation Beth Israel's BITY youth group held a car wash. The group was raising funds for scholarships for regional weekend retreats.

Shore Memorial's Surgical Services Department honors retiring Operating Room Nurse Manager
      Ann Furst, RN, received Shore Memorial Hospital's 2008 Surgical Chairman's Award on Sept. 18 during a ceremony at Harbor Pines Golf Club. The award was presented by Dr. Leonard Galler, chairman of the Department of Surgery at Shore Memorial. Dr. Galler also presented Furst with a proclamation from the City of Somers Point.

Alzheimer's Association's Memory Walk set for Oct. on AC Boardwalk
      The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk has a new location this year, kicking off Oct. 5 at Kennedy Plaza on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. The 5K walk is expected to draw nearly 3,000 people from the region, to raise awareness and funds to fight the disease.
