Atlantic County Maccabi Basketball Team (13/14 age group) Front row (L-R): Seth Morowitz, Brent Slotoroff, Mike Shugar, Jesse Weiner, Ben Thielberger, Michael Greenman, Max Grossman and Max Simon. Back row: Asst. Coach, Leo Schoffer and Head Coach, Allan Greenman. Three thousand Jewish athletes representing 58 communities and 8 nations assembled outside of Detroit, Michigan last week for the 2008 Maccabi games. The Atlantic County delegation sponsored by the Katz JCC of Margate was represented by several sports including a 13-14 year old Basketball team. Under the direction of Head Coach Allan Greenman and Assistant Coach Leo Schoffer the squad won five of seven games and finished in fourth place.
The team opened up with an impressive 55- 44 victory over Long Island led by Brent Slotoroff's 31 point effort. Later that day, the team prevailed over Staten Island by a score of 38-48. Slotoroff was again the leading scorer with 21 points and received support from swing man Michael Schugar who added 15.
The second day of competition began with a 56-38 victory of San Francisco in a total team effort led by Jesse Weiner's 11 points.
Atlantic County then won what many considered the most exciting game of the tournament as they defeated Bergen County 51-50 on a three point half court shot by Brent Slotoroff at the buzzer. Point guard Michael Greenman playing another heady game hit four 3 pointers and scored fifteen points. That victory gave Atlantic City a No. 2 seat behind Los Angeles among the eight teams moving to the medal round.
The locals next faced home team Detroit whom they defeated by a score of 68-45 in another team effort. In addition to the big three of Slotoroff, Schugar and Greenman, forward Max Grossman scored 8 points while center Seth Morowitz added 6. Both of these young men also played a fine defensive game. Similar to the first game, Brent Slotoroff took a three point shot at the end, but this time it hit the back of the rim and the dream of facing Los Angeles for the Gold medal was thwarted. Atlantic County did however advance to the bronze medal game where they fell to Chicago 47-32.
Other members of the team where guard Max Simon who played tough defense throughout the tournament and Ben Thielberger who gave Atlantic County a depth off the bench.
