Weeding Out The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
The most common concern I hear form my customers is "How do I find the right carpenter?"
First of all, a carpenter should love his job. Which translated into a successful outcome for everyone.
Seeking someone to work in your home is alot like a job interview. Are your phone calls being returned? Are your concerns taken seriously? Are they willing to produce references? These are the things you should start out with.
Once you meet with your carpenter for the first time, please take note as to wether or not you felt at ease. Knowing that your carpenter is licenced and insured with the state of New Jersey is a basic beginning.
Local help is preferred over out of town for obvious reasons: popping in to address a concern, checking references, and add on work to your home.
A good carpenter will leave you wanting more.
Your home is important and should be respected. Realizing that there will be some disruption in any improvements, at the end of the day, it shouldn't appear as if the Tasmanian Devil has set up shop!
The best advice I can give is to ask for references! A phone call to a previous¿ "local¿" customer can be a wealth of information regarding your carpenters talents and work ethic; pictures of previous work is always a plus.
And finally, you should be able to contact your carpenter/ contractor day or night without feelings of guilt! A good carpenter will be there for you. The good guys are out there; I should know, I'm one of them.
