High-fashion eyewear from the finest companies, and ocular prosthetics
When Henry and Adam Freund were growing up in Philadelphia in the 1870s, they certainly heard plenty of discussion around the dinner table about the optical profession. Members of their Mother's family were in the optical profession for several generations in both Bavaria and Philadelphia.
After apprenticing and working in Philadelphia for 12 years, Henry, with his brother Adam, moved to Atlantic City, and established Freund Brothers at Maryland Avenue and the Boardwalk in 1898. Besides eyewear, Freund Bros. sold cameras (Kodaks) and did film developing. They also had a lending library in part of the store. In 1921, a store was opened up at 1006 Pacific Avenue.
In the 1930s, Henry's two children, William and Edna, took over the business. In the 1940s, eyewear, contact lenses and artificial eyes became the mainstay of the business. In 1949 the business was moved to 1514 Pacific Ave. and in 1975 the business was relocated to Central Square on New Road in Linwood, where it is today.
In 1963 William's son, Hank, started working in the business and in 1976 became the proprietor. Today the main aspects of the business are fashion eyewear and ocular prosthetics. You can call us at 927-0990 or hank@freundoptical.com.
