ROB AND LAURA HUBERMAN MEET EX-MARGATER SCOTT POGODA IN BEIJING, CHINA
Several area residents have made the long journey to Beijing, China, the latest visitors to the land once forbidden to Westerners, were Rob (marketing and book publishing operator) and his wife, Laura Huberman (psychiatric therapist) of Margate. Before making this memorable trip earlier this year, Huberman's Margate based book publishing company, ComteQ, released "The Shanghai I Remember" by Ellis Jacobs. The Hubermans went to Beijing to market a project with former Margate resident Scott Pogoda. "Just a coincidence that a nice Jewish boy from Margate with a Chinese sounding name owns a business in Beijing (where we presume there are few Jews) developing luxury vacation resorts," declared Huberman. Scott's parents, Arnold and Wilma Pogoda and brother, Gary, currently reside in Cape May County. This month (June) ComteQ released the 7th printing of Ventnor resident Betty Grebenschikoff 's gripping Holocaust memoir, "Once My Name was Sara." Betty and her family spent World War II years in Shanghai's Jewish enclave Hangkew after a dramatic escape from Nazi Germany where Betty and her mother witnessed first hand, "Crystal Night," walking unnoticed through the broken glass strewn streets of Berlin. Rob's current project is a pictoral book of nostalgic Jewish businesses of Atlantic City, working with Leo Schoffer on the volume scheduled for an October release, a must purchase book. Rob is the former editor of the Jewish Times who has embarked on a successful book marketing career.
THESIS ON THE MEDIEVAL SPANISH OF SPANISH JEWS GAINS RAYMOND HARRIS HIS MASTER'S DEGREE
There are few of us who know that medieval Spanish was spoken by Spanish Jews way back in history, but one local resident, Raymond Harris, recently received his Masters Degree in this ancient language from La Salle University, which is part of the university's Bilingual/ Bicultural Studies. Its actual description is "Ladino/Judeo-Espanol" which Spanish Jews took with them to Turkey, Greece and the Balkans. Raymond, the husband of Lori Fixler and father of Sam Harris, has also received his certification as a translator of English into Spanish also at LaSalle's Hispanic Institute and is credited with translating multiple medical documents as well as some legal documents, while achieving his Masters and working full time at two jobs. Raymond, son-in-law of Inge Fixler, of Margate and the son of Sidney Harris of Glasgow, Scotland, has been teaching Spanish the past five years.
GRANDDAUGHTER OF BETTY JANE RABINOWITZ COMPETES WELL IN CONNECTICUT CLASSIC
The Kempo (Karate) Classic in Ridgefield, Connecticut, is a test of skill and endurance, which was well displayed by Samantha Stein,10, as she competed recently in the 9th annual classic. She was first in Maneuvers and was second in Kataform and Kung-fu, while her 8-year-old sister Eve, did well. A younger sister, Rianna, and brother, Nathan, were too young to compete. They are the children of Alan Stein and Cheryl Rabinowitz Stein, of Cherry Hill, N.J,. and the grandchildren of Betty Jane Rabinowitz (Margate) and the late Samuel Rabinowitz, and Joyce and Jerry Stein of Cherry Hill. Nice going kids.

As a follow-up to the recent 50th anniversary of Beth El Synagogue, Congregation President Dr. David Seitman, M.D., informs HM that it was a huge success, attracting 200 guests. He praised
Past-President Marilyn Kessler "for orchestrating the entire affair, which was a major success, with the shul filled to its maximum. And we had to turn some people away. I have to compliment Marilyn's committee for their efforts." Past-President Harry Brown, a founding member, did a great job as emcee. The event had a nautical theme; as guests arrived they were greeted by the Captain performed by Seitman.
CORRECTING SPELLING ERRORS IN LAST WEEK'S HM COLUMN
"To err is human," as the saying goes and that's what HM did in last week's column, not properly identifying the mother of ACHS graduate Emma Shakarshy, whose correct name is Dr. Shelley Rosenfeld, Ph.D. (not Rosenthal) and the daughter of Roy and Joanne Goldberg, whose correct first name is Janey (and not Janet). We apologize for the errors.
